What Is MyQ?
MyQ is the smart home platform developed by Chamberlain Group, the company behind both Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door openers. It's built directly into most openers manufactured since 2016, and can be added to older openers with the MyQ Smart Garage Hub ($40-60).

Step-by-Step MyQ Setup
Download the MyQ App
Download "myQ" from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Create a new account with your email address, or sign in if you already have a Chamberlain/LiftMaster account.
Locate Your Opener's Learn Button
On your garage door opener motor unit, find the "Learn" button. On most models, it's a small colored button (purple, yellow, or orange) near the antenna wire. You may need to remove a light cover to access it.
Put Opener in Pairing Mode
Press and hold the Learn button until the LED indicator starts blinking (usually 3-5 seconds). This puts the opener in WiFi pairing mode for the next 3 minutes.
Connect to WiFi via App
In the MyQ app, tap "Set Up Device" and select your opener model. When prompted, connect to your home's 2.4GHz WiFi network (5GHz won't work). Enter your WiFi password and wait for connection confirmation.
Name Your Device and Test
Give your garage door a name (e.g., "Main Garage"). Test the connection by using the app to open and close the door. Verify that push notifications are working by triggering the door manually.
Smart Home Integration
MyQ integrates with major smart home platforms, though some require additional purchases or subscriptions. For a full comparison of smart openers, see our complete smart opener guide.
Voice control requires the Key by Amazon service, which uses Alexa for commands like "Alexa, close the garage door." Setup through the Alexa app is straightforward, and you can include garage control in Alexa routines.
Cost: Free with Alexa, but Amazon Key integration is a separate service.
Google Assistant voice control requires a MyQ Premium subscription ($1.99/month or $19.99/year). Once enabled, say "Hey Google, open the garage" for hands-free control.
Cost: $1.99/month or $19.99/year for MyQ Premium.
HomeKit integration requires the MyQ Home Bridge ($50), a separate hardware device that connects your MyQ opener to Apple's ecosystem. Once set up, use Siri and include your garage in HomeKit automations.
Cost: $49.99 one-time for MyQ Home Bridge.
Amazon Key for Garage allows Amazon delivery drivers to open your garage door to leave packages inside, protecting them from theft and weather. Available in select areas (including most of the GTA).
Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Won't connect to WiFi | Ensure you're using 2.4GHz WiFi (not 5GHz). If your router combines both bands, temporarily disable 5GHz during setup. Check signal strength in garage—at least 2 bars needed. |
| Frequent disconnections | Weak WiFi signal is the most common cause. Add a WiFi extender to your garage, or move your router closer. Metal garage doors can block signals—position extender inside the garage. |
| App shows "offline" | Power cycle the opener by unplugging for 30 seconds. Check your home internet connection. If issue persists, reset the opener's WiFi by holding the Learn button for 10+ seconds. |
| No push notifications | Check phone settings—ensure MyQ app has notification permissions. In the MyQ app, verify notifications are enabled under Settings → Notifications. |
| Delayed response | Normal latency is 2-4 seconds. If longer, it's usually a WiFi issue. Commands are processed through MyQ's cloud servers, so a stable internet connection is essential. |
